              CaribSea South Seas Base Rock
CaribSea South Seas Base Rock is a fossilized coral limestone with excellent macro- and micro-porosity — providing strong structural foundation and high surface area for biological filtration. Pre-processed and ready to use, it cuts down on curing time compared to raw ocean rock and is ideal for reef setups, marine displays or African cichlid / hard-water freshwater tanks.
Stack it confidently to build caves, arches or ledges; the rough texture gives natural look and plenty of hiding spots for fish. Rinse lightly before placing, and for reef systems allow some flow behind rockwork to keep detritus from settling.
Usage & Setup Tips:
- Rinse the rock lightly to remove shipping dust.
- For reef use: soak or rinse thoroughly, then stack with stable support (epoxy/silicone) if building archways.
- Allow flow behind rockwork to promote biological activity and reduce dead spots.
- Compatible with both marine and hard-water freshwater systems; avoid using as live rock replacement in a reef system if seeking immediate coral attachment unless specifically conditioned.
Specifications:
- Material: Fossilized coral limestone (≈ 97% calcium carbonate)
- Void space: High porosity (macro + micro)
- Sizes: Available by weight (10 lb, 20 lb, 40 lb) — treat size as variant in your system
- Use: Reef aquariums, marine displays, hard-water freshwater (African cichlids)
Why We Like It:
At Big Fish Aquarium, we recommend this rock when you want reliable structure and superior porosity without the unpredictability of raw ocean rock. It looks good, stacks well, and gives you a strong biological surface area right out of the box.
